Narrative Systems - Exhibition | Nay Collection

From Ritual Image to Generative Meaning

Narrative is not only something we tell.

It is something we build.

Across cultures and media, images have carried meaning through different systems. From ritual practices to industrial reproduction, from personal memory to algorithmic generation, this exhibition explores how narrative is shaped - not only by what is shown, but by how it is constructed.

These systems are not abstract. They are embedded in lived practices, experiences, and contexts.

Across six rooms, the exhibition traces a series of transformations. It begins with collective systems of belief, where images organize the world through shared structures. It moves through authorship and industrial production, where narrative becomes structured and reproducible. It then turns inward, where memory and identity reshape the image, before returning to external systems in the form of data, computation, and generative processes.

In its final stage, narrative reaches language itself.

Yet these transformations are not neutral.

If systems can produce images and language, they do not guarantee meaning.

They shape what can be seen, understood, and remembered.

Narrative is no longer only constructed.

It is interpreted, negotiated, and sustained.

Meaning constructed through language

The exhibition unfolds across six rooms, each marking a shift in how images carry meaning.

It begins with ritual practices, where images are not created for display but for use. They belong to shared systems of belief, where meaning emerges through repetition, rhythm, and collective forms.

As these systems evolve, artists begin to transform inherited visual languages. The image becomes a space of interpretation, where tradition is reconfigured through individual expression.

With industrialization, narrative enters systems of reproduction and circulation. Images are designed to move, repeat, and scale, becoming part of larger structures.

The focus then turns inward. Narrative becomes personal - shaped by memory, identity, and experience. Images fragment and reflect individual perspectives.

In contemporary contexts, images operate within systems of data and computation. They are generated, selected, and positioned within networks. Meaning emerges through relation.

Finally, narrative reaches language itself. Words become the primary medium, shaped by both human intention and generative processes.

Meaning is no longer fixed.

It is produced through interpretation.
