THE SALVAGES

I don’t know much about gods, but I think they must live inside copper and glass and silicon just as they do in the roiling waves, the tides, the moon, ascension of heavy steel tubes traversing the Atlantic, fearful views from on high fueled by their magic. The mystic haze steaming off phthalates and liquid crystals, dark clouds of dust and smoke, the roll of a thunderball all home to gods and their demons. In the supernature of unseen wires, unreal voices in the tongue of our creator, in the holy flock of stern celestial eyes and fires burning lightning quick in our great dark seas. In the bromine and polymers, mercury and lead of devices we must inter with respect when dead lest the ether off carcasses left to rust come back like unfinished souls to haunt us.

I don’t know much about gods, but I think they must have something to do with endurance. Their tenuous connection with the bodily world, their necessity for the ecological protection of humankind. They may have something to do with music and speech and love. I think of them as supporting the rest of the mind. I think they might have something to do with beauty itself. (That was a beautiful opening line.) I have no intention of dying.
