MOURNING SONG
By Sasha Stiles, after Sylvia Plath
Hypothetical child, I berthed you. Imagination
mothered you, love’s fat watch clucking.
Now you’ve grown into games:
Make Believe. Let’s Pretend. There you are
in your biding spot, babbling again. You
hide and speak, you and your million spoiled siblings,
mouths milking air. Unfathered,
you sleep the sleep of the unborn. I
rock myself to bed.
